the lunatics in our shoes

Premeditated rudeness
masking as shrewdness.
Corrosive obsession
killing the possession.
All of us crazies
stealing the daisies.
Learning no lesson
in session after session --

We're crazy,
crazy, crazy people
Look at what we've done
We're crazy,
crazy, crazy people
Look at the webs we've spun

We invented space craft
and 100s of cheeses
wind-up toys
and plastic Jesus --
We've praised the Lord
and Uncle Tom
along with dynamite
and hydrogen bombs

We invented the wheel
cars and trains
plastic and steel
and acid rain
sold the truth for time
sold souls for fame
put a man on the moon
put a man in chains

There's lunatics in our shoes
who forget how to love
when their pride is bruised
making decisions about the rules
with such indifference
to which route we choose
and the tomorrows created
if we loose
to the wounded hearts
in these shoes

We invented TV dinners,
microwave ovens,
and marshmallow bunnies
bought by the dozens,
Grabbed what we wanted
stuffed it in the bag
made a clean escape
put on tails and wagged

avoided the consequences
fees and fines
denied all charges
of past war crimes
We libeled and slandered
and pestered and nagged
and labeled each other
with barcode and tag

There's lunatics in our shoes
who forget how to love
when their pride is bruised
making decisions about the rules
with such indifference
to which route we choose
and the tomorrows created
if we loose
to the lunatics
in our shoes

So fight for what's right,
and keep up with the news
Keep the goal in sight
and swim in twos
Get up on time
(if you snooze you loose)
Appropriately vent
and play by the rules
Pay the rent,
Keep up with your dues,
And say a prayer for the lunatics
in our shoes
